Thomas Gibboney
Our Earliest Known Ancestor
Much of the following was derived from "The Biographical Encyclopedia of Juniata Valley - Volume 2, 1897."
Sometime in the 1780's a Thomas Gibboney was born. We know that he came from Lancaster County, PA (which is located near Philadelphia, and was a major immigration port, particularly for the Irish) and assume that he was born there. The record starts with his moving to Jericho Mills in Juniata County, PA and then to Mifflin County, PA and settling near the Dunkard Church in Derry Township.

Thomas was married to Sarah Klein on October 20, 1801 in the Schwartzwald Church near Reading, PA. We do not know much about either of their parentage, however we do suspect the Gibboney family originated in Northern Ireland and the Klein's were Pennsylvania Dutch.
Thomas was a shoemaker (cobbler) by trade and had eight children listed as follows: Henry, Abraham (who died in the Civil War), Paul, John, Mary, Elmira, Elizabeth, and Catherine. Thomas died at age 63, and Sarah at age 66. |
